Shepherd's Heart is located midway between Mishawaka and Elkhart in St. Joseph County, IN. In 1895 the Baugo congregation, a daughter of the West Goshen congregation, divided with the northern part organized into Osceola. The elders were Joel Shively, Hiram Krieghbaum, and Bro. Puterbaugh. Prior to becoming separate organizations, the congregation met in a schoolhouse and then in a Baptist church in Baugo Township. In 1893 members purchased a Methodist church in Elkhart County on Mishawaka Road. The 1918 records list sixty members served by a succession of pastors providing a free ministry. Ervin Weaver became the first full-time pastor in 1932. In 1935 the church house was raised and a full basement put in, greatly increasing the capacity for Sunday school. In 1954 an addition provided more classroom space and a balcony was added to the sanctuary. In 1969 the congregation purchased thirty acres of land, sold its meetinghouse, and built a new facility, along with a parsonage, several miles away. Ten of the twenty acres were sold in 1998. The ten remaining acres include a wooded area with a pavilion and adequate space for camp outs, hog roasts, and other outdoor activities. Funds from the sale of this acreage were used to build an addition onto the Christian Education portion of the building. The name of the church was previously Osceola Church of the Brethren, but was changed in March of 2015. We are still affiliated to the district.
Statement of Faith:
The following teachings that arise in the New Testament are basic to our faith and are held in common by this congregation.
We believe the Bible is the unique revelation of God and it is fully and equally inspired in all its parts, and is the final authority for the Christian faith & living.
We believe in one God, eternally existent in three persons; the Father, the Son, & the Holy Spirit, creator of all things, and infinitely perfect in His being and works.
We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God; He is true God and true man, conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, was offered up on a cross, died for the sins of the world, and was raised back to life on the third day.
We believe Jesus is the only way of salvation, that God was in Christ Jesus reconciling the world to Himself, pardoning the sins of those who believe and trust in Him for eternal life.
We believe in the ministry of the Holy Spirit, who works to lead sinners to God and to guide believers in their life in Christ.
We believe in the church, both in the universal fellowship of all believers, and in the local church, which is ordained of God for a community of worship, fellowship, training and service for all believers. We believe Jesus is the true head of the church, that He has ordained practices to be observed by the church which include:
*baptism of believers by triune immersion
*observance of the Lord's Supper (love feast) and the bread and the cup
*washing of the saint's feet
*laying on of hands
*annointing and prayer for healing of the sick.
We believe that God is calling us to a missional vision of a community of believers that embodies the very heart and soul of Jesus Christ and His love for all of humankind. This vision compels each of us to become Christ-like in living and to embrace the fact that we are being sent by God to be in partnership with Him in ministering to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of every person that God allows us to meet.
Prayer is an important part of our ministries, within our walls and in our personal lives. It is necessary for the continued growth of our spiritual lives and congregation.
The Bible says: "Where two or three are gathered in His name, God, Jesus, & the Holy Spirit will be present." (Matthew 18:20)
Youth (6th Grade - Seniors)
The youth ministry at Shepherd's Heart is committed to three very simple things: telling the stories of God and people; paying attention to where God is moving in our individual and communal lives; and cultivating a willingness to join in the work we see God doing. We work to do this through a variety of gatherings and projects together. At this point we are still building the formalized programming of the youth ministry and welcome suggestions and ideas. All who are interested are more than welcome to come join us. Any questions or comments, feel free to contact us!
We are very pleased to offer a variety of Life Application Classes for people who wish to study more the Lord and His word on Sunday mornings.
We start with the youngest, with a furnished nursery up to age 4. The other children's classes accomodate 5yrs - 2nd grade and
3rd grade - 5th grade. We have a youth department (6th grade - seniors) that meets each Sunday morning. They try to have at least one fun activity per month to invite friends to join them. There are also several adult classes studying things from books of the Bible, specific topics, and current events, and you may choose any class you would like to attend.
During the worship service we offer the nursery with helpers if you want to make use of it. We also have a special program called “Bible Fun Day” for children 5 years old - 5th grade. They leave the service after the Morning Prayer to enjoy a reading of a short Bible story and a craft to make.
These times together on Sunday mornings help us to build each other up and enhance our learning of the plans Christ has for us.
Music & Worship
We consider our music ministry to be a 'blended' service: a mix of traditional brethren hymns and a praise time filled with contemporary choices. We have guitars, drumsets, a digital & upright piano, organ and a complete team of dedicated singers and instrumentalists that help move the Lord's words through our hearts with sound. Scripture says to "Make a joyful noise"; we do that and more.
We also enjoy many hymn-sings and concerts throughout the year, blessed by many gifted bands and talents. Anyone is welcome to help us make this ministry possible and we appreciate all the gifts God has provided in our congregation.
Missions & Evangelism
While we focus to uplift each member in our congregation, we also find it our duty as Christians to support our community, both local and international. We stand behind many missions, as well as international organizations and outside brothers and sisters in Christ. You can read more specifics on those missions below. We have mission trips open to the congregation, to places such as Puerto Rico and Haiti. We strive together to do anything we can to provide hope, help, and happiness to those who need it, all in the name of the Lord.
We have the privilege of receiving the Sunday morning message from our current Lay Pastor, Brent Zumbrun. Check our Sermons Page to hear some examples of his (and our other Guest Pastors') messages, and join us Sundays at 10am to enjoy worship together!
